When someone asks AI to recommend a business like yours, are you the answer?
For most UK businesses, the answer is no — and they don’t know it.
The way people find businesses has changed — again
Twenty years ago, if your business wasn’t on Google, you were invisible. Most business owners remember the moment they realised they needed a website.
That moment is happening again. AI-powered search engines — ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity — don’t show a list of links. They recommend specific businesses by name.
And to recommend you, they need to be confident they understand who you are, what you do, and whether you can be trusted. If that confidence isn’t there, they recommend someone else.
Not because your business isn’t good enough — but because AI can’t tell.
How we discovered the problem
Photography has long been a personal interest of our founder, Hedley Basford, one he developed into a commercial service working with businesses across the south-east. Over years photographing companies and their premises, he noticed a pattern had changed: businesses with excellent reputations and loyal customers were completely invisible to AI search engines. Their competitors — sometimes less experienced, sometimes less established — were being recommended instead.
The difference wasn’t quality. It was clarity.
The businesses being recommended had digital footprints that AI systems could read confidently. The ones being ignored didn’t.
Hedley raised what he’d noticed with his co-founder Tony Lord, a chartered engineer. The two had already spent a decade helping SME clients secure R&D tax relief for AI-related projects — giving them a close, practical understanding of how AI systems process information — so they recognised immediately that this pointed to something systemic, and spent months investigating how AI systems actually evaluate businesses.
What they found led them to build Entity Confidence — a service that shows business owners exactly how AI sees them, and what to do about it.

What we’ve found so far
We’ve assessed many UK businesses — from insurance brokers to dental practices, solicitors to office space suppliers to window installers.
The pattern is remarkably consistent: most businesses assume they’re visible. Almost none know how to check, or what to do with their findings if they do.
And the most consistent gap isn’t what most businesses expect. It’s rarely the absence of a good website, or a lack of genuine credentials and history — most of the businesses we’ve assessed have both. The gap is that AI-powered search engines still don’t reliably recommend them.
When someone asks an AI system who to consider, businesses with strong reputations and decades of trading history are routinely passed over in favour of competitors with a larger footprint of reviews and independent corroboration — even when the underlying business is just as good, or better.
The principal contributing factors are usually simple: a lack of external validation such as customer reviews to anchor the business in AI’s eyes, content that’s gone quiet — no recent news, lapsed filings, dormant social profiles — and inconsistencies in name, address, or contact details that make it harder for AI to recognise a business as a single, trustworthy entity.
“We had a strong reputation locally and assumed that was enough. The report showed us that AI systems couldn’t even connect our company name to our services. That was a wake-up call.” — Director, professional services firm, Kent
